Structure-Function Histopathology era
In the Structure-Function Histopathology era (1923–1959), renal pathologists forged a clinicopathologic link that connected glomerular morphology to clinical syndromes and prognosis. Paul Kimmelstiel and Clifford Wilson clarified nodular diabetic glomerulosclerosis, illustrating how diabetes-related glomerular lesions correlate with disease progression and outcome. George Palade's electron microscopic work provided ultrastructural insight into the glomerular filtration barrier, detailing podocyte foot processes and the basement membrane to relate structure to function. Iversen and collaborators advanced percutaneous renal biopsy, enabling direct light microscopy assessment of glomerular disease in living patients and strengthening the diagnostic-prognostic framework.
